Hamlet is a network of geographically focused [Pleroma](https://pleroma.social/)
instances. We work with volunteers from local communities in order to help them
run their own social media site. If you wish to volunteer to help run a Hamlet
instance in your home town, send us an email at
[smile@hamlet.social](smile@hamlet.social).

Locally deploying servers has several benefits over centralized social media
like Facebook or Twitter.

- **We do not put ourselves in a position to moderate the entire network.** This
means that content is moderated for your local community, by your local
community.
- **The network is also interoperable.** Even though there are official Hamlet
servers, you can set up an unofficial server, and participate in the network
just fine. You can do this by setting up your own
[Pleroma](https://pleroma.social/) server, or using a managed hosting solution
like [Tribes](https://tribes.host/).
- **Local money stays local.** When a local business advertises on Facebook,
all of that money leaves the local economy. When a local business advertieses
on Hamlet, that money stays in the local economy, and is able to be used to
benefit the community.
